JUST HOW BAD ARE THE PEACE SPORT MOPEDS?

Recently there have been a lot of reports about Peace Sport getting busted by the Feds. Apparently, the product they sell is not the product they say they sell. And according to one local dealer, there are a lot of Peace Sport units out there that are illegal mopeds.

But the main claim people make against Peace Sport mopeds is that they are very poorly made. The warranty from the factory is 30 days or 300 miles, parts only, and they constantly break down. According to one local dealer, Peace Sport mopeds cost the dealer about $300. You can make a lot of money on service and parts if you sell something that you know is going to break down right away.

Exploding 80s

According to the experts at the Department of Moped and Scooter Safety, there are a whole lot of 80cc kits out there that are in the process of going boom.

Tom Read, of the DMSS, recently disassembled an 80cc kit that failed at less than 1000 miles.

What he found was that the kit was installed wrong. The cam timing, which is very important in 4 stroke mopeds, was off, and the intake valve was hitting the piston.

"A good mechanic would have caught this right away." said Martin Largent from the Department of Motorcycle and Scooter Safety, "That this moped was allowed to operate on the street ignores basic safety. Someone could have been seriously hurt."

According to Mr. Read, the faulty cam timing was just the straw that broke the moped's back.

"The jetting in the carb was wrong, the exhaust was wrong, the electronic timing was too slow. This was a disaster waiting to happen. Unfortunately it stranded the owner miles from home."

SOUTH CAROLINA MOPED PLATES

In South Carolina, the seller of a Moped is required by State Law to attach a metal identification plate to each moped without pedals.... This plate must be designed by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

This means that the plastic "novelty" moped plates people are buying from local dealers on craigslist for $10 are illegal. The dealer who sold you the moped is required by law to attach an approved metal South Carolina moped plate to the moped.

It is unlawful for a person to operate a moped without pedals upon the public highways and streets of this State without displaying the metal identification plate which must be attached to the vehicle. A person who does not have an official South Carolina metal moped tag on his or her moped is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be fined not more than two hundred dollars or imprisoned not more than thirty days.

So riding that moped with the illegal plastic Kinkos plate that the local dealer sold you is a crime. Did he tell you that when he took your $10?

If you did not get a legal metal Moped plate when you bought your moped, you can demand one from the dealer you bought it from. It is the law.

Demand the Legal Tag.
